Urogynecology

Urogynecologists are board-certified physicians who have completed a 4-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed by an additional 3-year fellowship training specifically in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. This extended training equips them with expertise in managing a variety of pelvic floor issues.

Symptoms Treated

Symptoms treated include:

  • Urinary Incontinence: Involuntary leaking of urine with cough or activity as well as with urgency
  • Fecal Incontinence: Accidental bowel leakage without or without awareness
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Descent of the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, into the vagina
  • Intersitial Cystitis: burning, pressure, and pain in the bladder along with urinary urgency and frequency
  • Overactive Bladder: frequent urination, most commonly accompanied by the feeling of urgency

Common Causes

Pelvic floor disorders can arise from various causes, including factors like childbirth, aging, obesity, and chronic constipation. Other contributors include genetic predisposition, neurological disorders, and high-impact activities, all of which may impact the pelvic floor muscles and function.

When to Seek Help

Seek help if you experience persistent symptoms like pelvic pain or disruptions in bladder and bowel habits. After childbirth, address issues such as urinary incontinence. During menopause, consult for new or worsening pelvic symptoms. If pelvic floor problems impact your quality of life, relationships, or work, seek professional assistance. Post-surgery concerns or discomfort after high-impact events also warrant attention. If you have general concerns about pelvic health or want preventive measures, consult with a healthcare professional.

Remember, seeking help early can lead to more effective and less invasive interventions. If you have any doubts or questions about your pelvic floor health, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional or a urogynecologist.
