MIGS Practice Designation

In 2021, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) announced a new Focused Practice Designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS). Experienced MIGS surgeons who met ABOG’s strict requirements were given the opportunity to take an examination that would designate them as experts in complex MIGS procedures. This designation recognizes that expert gynecologic surgeons, who devote their practice to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform complex surgeries successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

The term “robotic” can be misleading as robots don’t perform surgery. Robotic assisted surgery utilizes the Da Vinci surgical system. This system gives the surgeon an advanced set of instruments and highly magnified, 3D high-definition views in surgery. The small instrument size gives the surgeon the ability to perform what is called robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery.

Uterine fibroids are common growths within the uterus. These are benign (not cancerous) and almost never turn into cancer. Fibroids vary in number, size and location. They can cause pain and heavy or irregular periods. Some women will have no symptoms. The treatment options vary and depend on several factors. Your provider may incidentally find fibroids on your yearly pelvic exam or on an pregnancy ultrasound. The best way to find out if you have uterine fibroids is to make an appointment with your gynecologist.

The following conditions can be treated with laparoscopy:

  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Uterine Abnormalities
  • Ovarian Cysts

The following conditions can be treated with hysteroscopy:

  • Abnormal and Heavy Periods
  • Postmenopausal Bleeding
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Uterine Abnormalities

Yes! There are many options for minimally invasive surgery that do not involve removal of your uterus. Some examples include removing fibroids (myomectomy), burning the lining of your uterus to reduce or stop your periods (endometrial ablation).
